Recently, tainted Herparin (a drug used to prevent blood clots during surgery) has been making its way into the United States. The tainted drugs are made in China and contain a chemical compound known as over-sulfated chondroitin sulfate (OSCS). OSCS is not an approved drug in the United States, but appears to be Heparin when subjected to tests and is significantly cheaper to manufacture.
Tainted Heparin causes allergic reactions that have led to:
- chest pain
- diarrhea
- dizziness
- dyspesia (painful, difficult or disturbed digestion
- dyspnea (unpleasant or uncomfortable breathing)
- hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)
- loss of consciousness
- nausea
- palpitations
- pharyngeal edema (swelling in throat)
- vomiting
- tachycardia (rapid beating of the heart)
- severe hypertension (abnormally low blood pressure)
These are just some of the many symptoms that patients subjected to tainted Heparin suffered. It has also cause the deaths of multiple patients.
